Actions
Number Assignment
Each phone number can be assigned to one AI agent at a time. The agent handles all inbound calls to that number. You can:- Use the same number across multiple campaigns by reusing the same agent
- Assign multiple numbers to the same agent (e.g., one per region)
- Change assignments at any time without losing the number
When you change which agent is assigned to a number, the change takes effect immediately. No downtime or reconfiguration needed.
Bring your own carrier
If you already have phone numbers with another carrier or PBX, you can route them to SmartAlex over SIP instead of buying new numbers. See the Telephony documentation for full integration guides for 3CX, Yeastar, FreePBX, Asterisk, Avaya, Mitel, Microsoft Teams, RingCentral, and more.Best Practices
Choosing the right number type
Choosing the right number type
- Local, best for businesses serving a specific region; callers see a familiar area code
- Toll-free, good for national or multi-region businesses
- Mobile, useful in markets where customers prefer dialling mobile numbers
Number organisation
Number organisation
- Name the agents clearly (e.g. “Main Line”, “Sales”, “Support”) so each number’s purpose is obvious
- Document which number is for which campaign or location
- Review unused numbers monthly so you’re not paying for ones you don’t need
